Learn to cook the Celtic way! Experience first-hand how delicious ancient recipes can be, and use authentic tools and techniques to create your own Iron Age feast.

Taught by experimental archaeologist and living history practitioner Caroline Nicolay, you’ll cook a variety of Iron Age dishes over the fire in Butser’s great roundhouse. Use natural and foraged ingredients, and learn to make Iron Age cheese, handmade butter, fire-baked flatbreads, as well as a full meal — including dessert! With both meat and vegetarian dishes, there’s something for everyone to try.

About the workshop

  • 10am - 3:30pm with breaks

  • Learn to prepare and cook delicious ancient recipes over an open fire

  • Immerse yourself in the Iron Age with authentic tools and techniques

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

All proceeds of this workshop go towards supporting the ongoing research and educational work of Butser Ancient Farm.

Included in your ticket

Entrance to the farm, a full day’s tuition and expertise, and all the tools and materials necessary to cook your own delicious Iron Age meal and side dishes.

This workshop includes food. Please contact us if you have any dietary requirements and we will do everything we can to accommodate you.


This workshop is suitable for ages 18+.

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear for this workshop.

Food is included in this workshop, but you may want to bring your own snacks as well. Sandwiches (subject to availability), hot and cold drinks, and snacks are sold in our gift shop.
