Chainmail (Maille) Making Workshop

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Immerse yourself in the world of maille, an armour as strong as metal but as flexible as cloth. It has protected its wearers across the world for over two millennia, and is still in use today. Guided by two experienced maille-makers, learn to make your own piece of history to take away with you. Craft a bracelet, patch, and three links of riveted maille to gain hands-on experience of various methods. Wear a maille top to understand the material, learn to produce butted maille, rivetted maille, and anneal links in the fire. Beginners welcome. Please note that strong hands are needed for the technical work.
