Timber Framing Course

Spend five days learning to timber frame on our unique site, surrounded by Anglo-Saxon Halls, Iron Age and Bronze Age Roundhouses, and a Stone Age timber-framed temple. Discover the ancient art of taking timber from the source through to a functional item, under the expert tutelage of Butser treewright Darren Hammerton. Test out a variety of historic tools, from flint and bronze axes to medieval and modern tools. Stay in our timber-framed Saxon hall for an additional fee.

About the workshop

  • Five day workshop Mon to Fri, 10am - 4pm with a break for lunch

  • Learn a range of timber framing techniques such as scribing a joint, using shave horses, drawknives, and axes to make wedges and treenails, a squaring timbers. Beginner friendly.

  • Course includes all materials and tools, including flint and bronze axes

  • Option to camp in a timber framed Saxon hall on site for an additional £100 for the week

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

During this course participants will create a lay-up, square timbers, scribe a joint, make treenails and wedges, cleave wood with wedges and froes, use a range of tools such as shave horses, draw knives, and axes.

Darren Hammerton is Butser’s Treewright and has been timber framing and managing Ancient Woodland since 1998. He led the builds of our two Anglo-Saxon halls, and has a team of apprentices who will be assisting with the course as well.

Included in your ticket

Entrance to the farm, a full 5 days tuition and expertise, and all the tools and materials necessary to work on a timber frame.

    Food is not included for this course. Sandwiches (subject to availability), hot and cold drinks, and snacks are sold in our gift shop. You’re also welcome to bring a picnic if you prefer!

    This workshop is suitable for ages 18+.
