What language did King Arthur speak? Where did the English language come from? What’s the difference between Old Welsh, Old English, and Gaelic? Have you ever wanted to learn the answers to these questions while sitting by the fire in an ancient house?
In this engaging and interactive workshop, linguist and Medievalist Harriet Earis will introduce you to the original language of Britain, known as Brittonic or Old Welsh. Together, you will trace the roots of modern English and other European languages all the way back to the Celts. You’ll also get a chance to read and interpret some of the earliest stories and poems in British history, written in the 5th and 6th centuries – the age of Beowulf and King Arthur.
Harriet is a fluent Welsh speaker and has a degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic Studies from Trinity College, Cambridge. She will also be giving a harp concert in the Iron Age roundhouse later in the day.
