Learn the ancient skill of spinning fleece into yarn. Long before machinery and even the spinning wheel, people learned how to make strong string by spinning fibres with a drop spindle - a stick with a weight at one end. Guided by heritage craftsperson Kat Wootton, discuss the merits of textile fibres, namely flax, nettle and wool. Explore the structure of wool and the importance of the twist. Discover how to use a simple drop spindle to then create a single ply yarn. Use fleece from two different heritage breeds.
