Ancient Metalworking Workshop

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Step back in time and experience the wonders of ancient copper metallurgy! In this immersive workshop, led by our resident experimental archaeologist and archaeometallurgist, Thérèse Kearns, you’ll learn how early civilisations transformed raw minerals into gleaming metal. From smelting copper from malachite to creating bronze alloys and casting your own metal object, you’ll be hands-on with the processes that shaped human history. You could even make a sundisc for summer solstice.

About the workshop

  • One-day workshop, 10am - 3pm with a break for lunch

  • Use a clay furnace, charcoal, and leather bellows to smelt copper and cast bronze

  • Discover the story of ancient metalworking from its invention to its rediscovery through experimental archaeology

  • Take home a cast object you’ve designed yourself
