Burial on the boundary: the archaeology of outcasts in Anglo-Saxon Wessex with Professor Andrew Reynolds (UCL)
Thursday 23rd June 7- 8.30pm
£10 per ticket
Following the conversion to Christianity in the 7th century AD, the treatment of people who contravened social norms became increasingly harsh. The practice of burying social outcasts on parish boundaries began during this time and endured until at least the 19th century. This talk brings together the evidence of archaeology, place-names and written sources to tell the story of this unusual, and sometimes grisly, custom.
Professor Andrew Reynolds is a specialist in medieval Archaeology from University College London, his research interests have focussed on the archaeology of early medieval societies in north-western Europe, especially Britain during the period AD700-1200, and the archaeology of standing buildings.
