Ancient metalworking demonstrations

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Join us in our Hot Technology Workshop for a demonstration of Bronze Age metalworking, as our archaeologist Thérèse uses an earth furnace and charcoal to reach temperatures of over 1,000 degrees celcius to smelt and cast copper and bronze.

This week, we’re exploring the techniques used to produce the Nebra sky disc — a mysterious 12-inch Bronze Age artefact showing the sun, moon, and stars cast in bronze. It’s the oldest artefact in the world showing cosmic phenomena, but its purpose is still unknown — as is how it was made. That’s what we’re exploring in this experiment!
